THE WORLD IS YOUR OYSTER

You know how important education is. So, if you’re moving here on business or for retirement and you have family still in school, you have plenty of options to continue their education regardless of their current level or their academic goals.

PRIMARY EDUCATION (PUBLIC)

Almost all schoolchildren in Thailand attend either public schools or those run by Buddhist monasteries. The Thai literacy rate is one of the highest in South-East Asia at about 90%.

Public schools are free for Thai citizens or those who were born in Thailand, and have one Thai parent. Expatriate children must pay fees when attending a public school, although the fees for public schools are usually cheaper than those of international schools. You need your child’s birth certificate and the Tabien Baan (your house registration document) to enrol your child in a public school.

Although there are some public schools where over 50% of classes are conducted in English, most expatriates send their children to internationals school due to the smaller class sizes and less learning by rote.

PRIMARY EDUCATION (PRIVATE)

BERKELEY INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

Thailand has some of the best private and international primary schools in the world. If you hail from the USA, Thailand has private / international schools that cater to your educational systems.

If you’re from the UK, you can select from many schools that have IB programs.

Every major country in the world has a school catering to your expatriates. The Singapore International School is here. There are German schools, French schools and schools based on many countries’ systems.

You can expect to pay anywhere from $10,000 to $30,000 per year per child for tuition and fees.

UNIVERSITY LIFE

If you are interested in studying in Thailand during your college or university years, many Thai colleges or universities have programs taught in languages other than Thai.

The universities in Thailand are massive.  Several of them are the size of large towns in the US.  A single university may have 70,000 employees or 50,000 students.  It can take 20 minutes to drive across campus in your car.

While many of the Thai elite send their children to the US or Europe for college educations, a fantastic university degree can be earned in Thailand for a fraction of what one would pay in a Western system.
